Santa Claus Village or a reindeer farm

You can ride reindeer right at Santa Claus Village or at a farm in the forest outside town. The village wins on convenience, the farm on quiet and time with the herders, and many visitors happily do both.

Santa Claus Village lies on the Arctic Circle, about 8 km north of the centre of Rovaniemi. It is not one company but more than 50, and among them are reindeer and husky businesses. You can step off bus 8, meet Santa and be in a reindeer sleigh within the hour.

The farms are further out, 20 to 35 minutes by van, in the forest where the herders live. The trip takes longer, and in return you get a quieter setting, the herd up close and stories by the fire. Here is how the two compare.

The quick answer

If you are already at the village, the reindeer safari at Santa Claus Village gives you about 30 minutes in the sleigh for $134. For a quieter forest farm with pickup and suits, take the 2 km forest ride. To do reindeer and the village in one go, the reindeer, huskies and Santa Claus Village day covers both for $210.

Should you ride reindeer at Santa Claus Village or at a farm?

At the village for convenience and a short half-day; at a farm for the forest, the herders and more time with the reindeer.

Both are real reindeer from real herds, led by people who know them. The difference is the setting and the logistics. The village safari starts a short walk from Santa's office. The farm rides start with a van ride and end by a fire in the woods.

The table sets the three most common choices side by side.

How do you get from Rovaniemi to Santa Claus Village?

By local bus 8, which runs all year, by a winter shuttle or by taxi. It is about 8 km from the centre and about 4 km by taxi from the airport.

  • Bus 8: the local line between the centre and the village, all year round.
  • Santa's & Airport Express: a private bus linking the airport, the centre and the village from November to March.
  • Apukka Shuttle Bus: centre, Santa Claus Village and Apukka, in autumn and winter.
  • Taxi: about 8 km from the centre; the village has its own taxi rank.

Most farm tours solve this for you. The forest ride picks up at set points, the photo tours at your hotel, and the full-day tours leave from the centre.

Farm tours include the drive; the village safari does not.

What is a reindeer farm visit like?

A van ride into the forest, the herd at the corral, a sleigh ride from 400 m to 2.5 km, then feeding and hot drinks in a kota or warm hut.

The farm visit to Reindeer Manor is about a 20-minute drive from the centre, and Beyond Arctic's farm about 35 minutes. Once there, herders introduce the reindeer and tell you how a herding family lives. On the 2 km forest ride you ride for about 40 minutes, stop by an open fire and then feed the reindeer and take photos.

That is the part guests remember most, the herders' stories and the quiet of the forest.

Can you see Santa and ride reindeer in one day?

Yes. Two full-day tours combine a reindeer farm with Santa Claus Village, with transport, lunch and winter clothing.

The reindeer, huskies and Santa Claus Village day runs 6 hours: a 500 m reindeer ride, a 500 m husky ride, salmon soup, then free time at the village. Children under 150 cm can try 10 minutes of mini snowmobiling. Safartica's Santa, snowmobile and reindeer day includes a meeting with Santa, a buffet lunch, a snowmobile safari to a reindeer farm and a short ride, for 6 hours 30 minutes to 7 hours 30 minutes.

Meeting Santa at the Santa Claus Office is free, Visit Rovaniemi notes, so a combo mostly buys you the transport, the farm and the other animals.

What else is there to do at Santa Claus Village?

Cross the Arctic Circle line, meet Santa, post a card with the Arctic Circle stamp and meet huskies. Visit Rovaniemi says more than half a million people come each year.

The Arctic Circle line is marked in the main square, with a webcam on it. Santa Claus Main Post Office stamps your mail with a special Arctic Circle postmark. Roosevelt Cottage, completed in June 1950, was the village's first attraction. Husky Park offers husky visits and rides all year except May.

Opening hours vary by company, since there are more than 50 of them. Most stay open longer from the end of November to early January.

Is Santa Claus Village worth it?

Yes, for families and first-timers. Meeting Santa is free, crossing the Arctic Circle takes a minute, and the reindeer and huskies are right there.

Go with the right picture in your head. It is a busy, cheerful place, not a quiet forest. At Christmas, queues happen. For the northern lights, Santa Claus Village itself says the light in the centre makes them hard to see, so go out to the darker edges or onto a night safari.

Our tip is to spend a few hours at the village and give the forest its own outing.

Which is better for kids: the village or a farm?

The village safari for small children who tire quickly; a farm visit or a combo day for kids who love animals and can handle a longer outing.

The 1-hour village safari is short, and the village restaurants are close by. The full day with Santa gives children a reindeer ride, huskies and mini snowmobiles in one trip, with winter clothing. Safartica's snowmobile day is not suitable for children under 4, and the self-drive husky safari states that drivers must be over 18.

Every tour we list cancels free up to 24 hours before, which is handy when a child wakes up with a cold.
