Best time for a reindeer ride in Rovaniemi

A reindeer sleigh ride needs snow, and in Rovaniemi the snow usually settles for good in late November and stays until about mid-April. Inside that window, each month feels different, and this guide walks through them.

The short version is snow first, then light. The first snow in Rovaniemi often melts away, and Visit Rovaniemi says it returns for good usually in late November, sometimes earlier, sometimes only around December. From then until spring, the sleighs run.

Christmas is the most magical time and the busiest. January is deep, blue and very cold. February and March bring the sun back while the snow is at its deepest. Outside the snow season you can still meet reindeer, just not in a sleigh.

The quick answer

For the best mix of snow, daylight and comfort, go in February or March and book the 2 km forest ride in the daytime. For Christmas, book the reindeer, huskies and Santa Claus Village day early. Without snow, from September to November, the walk with reindeer is the no-sleigh outing we like best.

When is the best time for a reindeer ride in Rovaniemi?

February and March. The snow is deep, the sun is back with 8 to 12 hours of daylight, and the northern lights are still in season.

December has the Christmas glow, and many families pick it for that reason alone. For the ride itself, late winter is hard to beat. The forest is white, the light is soft and long, and the cold is easier to live with than in January.

When does the reindeer sleigh season start in Rovaniemi?

When the snow settles for good, usually in late November. Visit Rovaniemi gives snow activities as late November or early December to early April.

The first snow falls in October or November and often melts. Santa Claus Village notes that in some years permanent snow arrives as early as the end of October, in others only in early December. One sleigh operator in our listings states its season as mid-November to mid-April.

For a late November trip, book a ride with free cancellation and watch the snow. Our sleigh season post tracks this winter.

Can you ride a reindeer sleigh in November?

Often from late November, once there is enough snow. Earlier in the month, farms offer visits and feeding, and some rides run only if the snow allows.

November is a month of change. Days shrink from about 7 hours of light to 5, temperatures range from plus 5 C to minus 10 C, and Santa Claus Village opened its Christmas season with the Countdown to Christmas on 7 November 2026. The photographer tour says plainly that its 400 m sleigh ride runs only when there is enough snow.

That makes November good for a farm visit built around the herd and the photos, with the sleigh as a bonus.

Is December a good time for a reindeer ride?

Yes, for Christmas magic. Expect about 2 hours 30 minutes of daylight, minus 10 C to minus 20 C and the busiest weeks of the year.

December is the polar night season. On the shortest day, 21 or 22 December, the sun does not rise at all in Rovaniemi. The snow and Christmas lights make up for it, and a sleigh ride in the blue midday dusk is lovely.

From the end of November to early January, most companies at Santa Claus Village run longer hours, and tours fill up. Book your ride before your flights feel final; free cancellation up to 24 hours before keeps it flexible. Our Christmas 2026 post has more.

Is January too cold for a reindeer ride?

No, with the right clothes. January averages minus 15 C to minus 30 C, and most tours lend thermal overalls and boots.

Guests on our listed rides have gone out at minus 27 C and minus 28 C and still loved it. The secret is the suit and the layers under it. Visit Rovaniemi advises long thermals, a wool or fleece layer, wool socks in roomy boots, a hat that covers your ears, and mittens over gloves.

Check what your tour includes. The forest, farm, photo farm and Santa days include warm clothing. The Santa Claus Village safari and the self-drive husky safari do not, so bring your own or rent.

Why are February and March the sweet spot?

The sun is back, daylight grows fast and the snow is at its deepest, which the Finnish Meteorological Institute puts in Lapland around March to early April.

Visit Rovaniemi says it simply: the sun comes out in February. Daylight goes from about 8 hours in February to 12 in March, and the average cold eases to minus 5 C to minus 15 C by March. Locals call it their favourite time of year, and it shows on the trails.

For a forest ride this is the best light of the winter, with sun on the snow and long shadows through the pines. Early March often brings strong aurora nights too, so a day ride and a night ride fit in one short trip.

Can you see the northern lights on a reindeer ride?

Sometimes. The aurora season in Rovaniemi runs from late August to early April, and the night safari takes you into a dark forest during it.

The aurora reindeer safari is the same 2 to 2.5 km forest ride after dark, with a fire stop and hot drinks. Nobody can promise the lights, and the operator does not. Guests say they still loved the starry sky and the quiet even on cloudy nights, and some got lucky.

It is a newer listing with 12 reviews and a 4.5 rating. Pair it with a day ride if seeing the forest in daylight matters to you.

Can you meet reindeer in summer or autumn?

Yes, on farm visits and walks. There is no sleigh without snow, but summer and autumn are calm months to meet the herd.

Visit Rovaniemi calls summer a peaceful time to meet reindeer and hear the story of the reindeer year. The midnight sun shines from early June to early July, and the autumn colours peak around mid to late September. Farms switch to visits and feeding, and the photographer tour runs all year without the sleigh.

From autumn, the walk at Apukka is our favourite no-snow choice: 2 km side by side with a reindeer, then black-pot coffee by the fire.
